Dementia Care: How to Respond to Agitated Behavior

Dementia Care: How to Respond to Agitated Behavior

Agitation is one of the common behaviors of persons with dementia. You will know when they have been agitated as they manifest restlessness, being upset, and repeated pacing from here to there. Agitation is caused by many different reasons, which include medication side effects, change of residence, or change of routines, among others.

As family caregivers, responding to agitation can be a challenging moment. But in our experience as providers of home care services in Lexington, Kentucky, these moments can be managed, prevented, or reduced.

When your loved one becomes agitated, keep in mind that it is something they can’t control. They need your patience, understanding, and compassion so that they can get through this episode safely and successfully. Your response is very instrumental in how long the agitation will last.

With that, here are ways you can respond to episodes of agitation:

  • Pay attention to what they say about what they’re agitated about
When you find out the cause of their agitation, you might have a clearer understanding of why they’re reacting in such a way.
  • Talk to them in a calm and positive way
Provide them with the reassurance that they may be looking for such as telling them that they’re safe with you or that you feel sorry for how they feel.
  • Offer activities that can serve as a positive diversion, such as doing arts, playing or singing some songs, or getting them to pay attention to another activity
When their attention is distracted, they can mellow down from their agitation.
  • Change their surroundings especially if these trigger some anxious responses
Try to reduce noise, play calming music, rearrange the furniture, or do whatever is necessary for them to feel calm and assured in their home.
  • Provide activities that can get your loved one busy
Having nothing to do can also trigger agitated behavior. When you detect this cause, look for an outlet that their energy can be expended. You can go take a walk somewhere or do something they’re interested in.
  • Be cautious of your own behavior
It can be tempting to be alarmed, angry, or frustrated, but these will not help. Just listen to them so you’ll gain an idea on how to respond to them. We have care providers who can also help you in providing them with personal care in Kentucky.
  • Seek support from your family members, friends, and other people who also have loved ones with dementia
Surround yourself with people who understand your situation so that you can have a good foundation in responding issues such as agitation.
