Caring for a loved one with dementia is difficult for both the families and caregivers. People suffering from dementia and other related diseases experience progressive brain disorders that make it more and more difficult for them to think clearly, remember things, communicate, and take care of themselves. The latter mentioned can be taken cared of through our home care services in Lexington, Kentucky.
But getting the best health care service will not be enough to take care of your loved one. People who suffer from dementia also face difficulty in communication, and this is why Barbara Care, Inc. is here to provide both you and your loved one’s caregiver some tips on how to communicate with them. Take a look:
- Make the interaction a positive experience.
Your attitude and body language will speak volumes. Keep a respectful and pleasant tone of voice when conversing with them. - Get their attention.
Limit all possible distractions – you can turn off the TV, shut the door, or move to a quieter location. Call them by their name, identify yourself and your relation to them, and use nonverbal cues to keep their attention. - Use simple words and sentences.
Speak slowly and audibly, but be extra mindful of your tone. Use names of people and places instead of pronouns like he, she, them. - Ask simple and answerable questions.
One question at a time is best, and a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ type of question is better.
We are here to provide the best personal care in Kentucky. The safety and wellbeing of your loved ones is our topmost priority. Taking care of someone with dementia will never be easy, but with us here, you won’t have to do it alone. Call us!
